At TISB, while respect for cultural diversity remains central to our ethos, English is the primary language of instruction, and students are expected to achieve proficiency in order to fully access the curriculum. To support learners for whom English is a second or third language, we offer a comprehensive English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme for students of all ages. Upon joining TISB, English Language Learners (ELLs) are formally assessed through the Cambridge English ESOL examination system and graded according to their ability. The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is used to determine each student’s level of proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. In addition to diagnostic tests, teachers carefully observe students and group them to best support their learning. In the Senior School, particular emphasis is also placed on assisting students with their mainstream academic subjects.

EAL lessons are conducted during Modern Foreign Language or English Literature lessons. These lessons are conducted in small groups and progress is mapped according to the levels of proficiency on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) scale

The learners are prepared for the Cambridge ESOL exams (KET/PET/FCE) according to their level of proficiency. These exams are conducted once every year and provide students with a globally recognised certificate to prove their English ability.

English language learners will be taught when study lessons are timetabled. The lessons are usually conducted in small groups. At this stage the focus is mainly on supporting the learners with their mainstream IB English curriculum as well as developing advanced level proficiency for further studies.
