primary-english-as-an-additional-language

While respect for cultural diversity is at the heart of TISB, our main teaching language is English, and each student will be required to become a proficient user of English in order to access much of the curriculum. At TISB we look to support students who require additional assistance when English is their second or even third language by providing a comprehensive EAL programme to students of all ages. On arrival at TISB, English Language Learners (ELLs) will be formally assessed through the Cambridge English ESOL examination system and be graded according to their ability. The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) will be used to evaluate a student’s level of proficiency in reading, writing and listening. Further to the diagnostic tests the teachers also observe students and group them accordingly. In the senior school the focus will also be on supporting the students with their mainstream subjects.

English language learners learn the English language in a more natural way through an immersion programme.

English language learners are accommodated within the Modern Foreign Language classes. The lessons are usually conducted in small groups or individual classes. Older children may also be withdrawn during classes other than MFL, in order to catch up key English reading and writing skills.

The children learn English through a bespoke curriculum created by the EAL teacher who collaborates with the class teachers to ensure content is relevant to learning experiences as far as possible. Learners participate in a wide variety of curriculum-based activities, acquire content knowledge, develop critical thinking skills and practice English language and literacy.
*EAL lessons are subject to an extra fee.
