Concert Music

Next Friday, the 4 June, TISB Primary Years will be hosting an online music show – The PY Music Showcase. The event will present recorded songs and students between LG1 and Grade 5. The show has been organised and put together by Ms Shamini, Mr Anand and Mr Ananth from the Music Department, and will feature a range of individual and group acts, speeches from Dr Caroline, Ms Emily, the music teachers and the student body. It will be a magnificent event broadcasted through Edpuzzle to the student body, and later be made available on YouTube for a wider audience. We got in touch with Ms Shamini and some of the participating students to find out more about the event.

Events like these bring all of us together and gives us something to celebrate and enjoy – Ms Shamini, TISB Music Teacher

This year, all students from LG1 through to Grade 5 have been learning musical pieces as part of their studies. As performances and exhibitions are a big aspect in all art forms, the TISB Music Department wants to give the students opportunities showcase their pieces. “Growing up, one of my biggest memories from school has been special events like these, and I want the students to experience the same despite the pandemic this year”, says Ms Shamini, who loves doing great and fun things together with the creative TISB student body. Students are also excited and glad to be able to display their work. “I am honoured to be a part of the showcase because it has always been my dream to be a part of something musical”, says Olivia from Grade 5. For many it is a chance to take the step out into the real word of musical performances. “I feel very grateful to be a part of the showcase because I love music and singing, and it is the first time I've ever done something like this”, says Keyush from Grade 5.

At TISB’s PY it is important to paint bigger pictures, by linking learning across and between subjects. “We have been working on integrating Music with the other subjects in PY”, says Ms Shamini, explaining that the songs have been selected based on the topic themes in each Grade. By doing so, students are able to make connections and learn better across all subjects, while at the same time enjoying themselves. Samya from Grade 5 says: “I think music plays a more important role in our lives than just a source of entertainment. It helps us through hard times like these, and I think it's a wonderful opportunity to help build the stage for students to express themselves and display their talents online”.

Due to the pandemic, online learning and the distance between the students, creating the group acts has been the most difficult part of the show. “When doing music online, everyone is in different time due the lags”, explains Ms Shamini, who, together with Mr Anand and Mr Ananth, has been collecting videos from individual students that will all be synced together into one song with a backing track. Although this has meant intensive coaching, retakes and changes, students have enjoyed this journey. “It feels amazing, because I love the song this year so much that I keep humming it whenever I am doing something”, says Ranya from Grade 4, who has been working hard to put the song together. By working hard on their class songs, the students have come together and built an even stronger community. “I really wanted to be in the PY Music Showcase because after a long time we got to sing as a class”, says Aryav from Grade 4, who loved hearing his fellow students sing.

The PY Music Showcase will air in all of PY’s virtual classrooms at 8 am, on Friday the 4 June. Get seated and ready to be welcomed by students Siddharth and Helena and enjoy the show.
